So THAT’S why Birds Sing!

By Tracy Lawrence

In my effort to discover everything I can about the world in my backyard from my spa, I set an alarm and woke up very early to find out what happens BEFORE a long day at work instead of my usual after work soak.

The first win was immediate: Sure, I had to get up an hour earlier, but it was a heck of a lot easier to drag myself from bed knowing there wasn’t a mad dash of prep for the day the moment my feet hit the cold, cruel floor. On the contrary, my plan was to enjoy a cup of hot coffee while submerged in hot water. How is that for incentive to not hit the snooze button?

I am fortunate to have a view of the horizon at sunrise from my yard. It was still dark, very quiet, and there I sat – alone with my thoughts.

I left the lights and jets off and listened. I noticed the sounds of my bird friends waking up, right at the moment the horizon began to lighten. The singing grew louder as I watched the most beautiful, changing art show across the sky. The sun continued to rise slowly and made its way into the morning sky like colorful wrapping on a gift: a new day.

Somehow, being handed a morning in such a way gave new perspective.

Then a realization: no wonder birds sing at the break of dawn!

The sound of nothing from my hot tub is a forever changing symphony. I know this sounds flakey, but I can’t imagine I am alone in enjoying the time spent warm, comfortable, still and quietly listening.

In my mind, I added to my imaginary list: gently falling snow, ice, fog, drizzle, bats, birds, rabbits, creeping shadows, falling leaves and every phase of the moon. Those are the shows I am getting tickets for. And I’m springin’ for the best seats in the house: my hot tub.

This story isn’t over. Starting the day in my spa left me feeling more grounded, more at peace, with a more relaxed approach to problems. Is it possible that my spa is making me better? I am a believer.

Make an hour for yourself and try it. Please share with me your observation, and as always, feel free to offer suggestions based on your experiences.

‘Til next time, I’m applauding loudly for an encore from the birds.
